In the latest FIFA rankings released on Thursday, Nigeria’s national football team, the Super Eagles experienced a significant drop, falling two places to 5th in Africa.

This marks a notable shift in the continental pecking order, as the Super Eagles now trail behind Morocco, Senegal, Egypt, and Cote d’Ivoire.

Morocco ascended to the top spot in Africa, climbing one place to 12th globally. They are followed by Senegal, who hold the 18th position worldwide. Egypt and Cote d’Ivoire round out the top four African teams, ranked 36th and 37th globally, respectively.

Globally, the top five positions remain occupied by Argentina, France, Belgium, Brazil, and England, maintaining their dominance in international football.

Nigeria’s decline in the rankings comes on the heels of a series of disappointing results in the 2026 World Cup Qualifiers for Africa. The Super Eagles suffered a historic defeat to the Benin Republic, their first ever against the nation, and previously drew with South Africa. These setbacks have cast doubt on Nigeria’s prospects of qualifying for the 2026 World Cup, leaving their hopes hanging in the balance.

The recent performances have sparked discussions among fans and analysts alike about the future of the Super Eagles and the necessary steps to reclaim their position among Africa’s elite football teams.
