The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has leveled serious allegations against the Rivers State Caretaker Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Tony Okocha, accusing him of deliberately fomenting a crisis in the state.
In a scathing statement, the opposition party asserted that Okocha’s actions are aimed at undermining the democratic process in Rivers State, particularly following the election that brought Governor Siminalayi Fubara into office.
Hon. Debo Ologunagba, National Publicity Secretary of the PDP, condemned Okocha’s remarks as reckless and dangerous to the state’s stability: “The reckless outburst by Tony Okocha further exposes the sinister plot by the APC in Rivers State which has been seeking for ways to instigate crisis, forcefully overthrow a democratic Order and impose an anti-democratic regime.”
Ologunagba highlighted Okocha’s use of provocative language, stating, “The use of the word ‘war’ by Mr. Okocha in his thoughtless statement clearly shows an evil intention which has been firmly resisted and will continue to be resisted by the people of Rivers State.”
Asserting Rivers State as a stronghold of the PDP, Ologunagba emphasized that the people stand firmly behind the elected government and oppose any attempts to destabilize the region.
The PDP called on the Inspector General of Police to intervene urgently, urging for Okocha’s immediate questioning: “Our Party demands that the Inspector General of Police immediately invite the Rivers State APC Caretaker Chairman and hold him personally liable for his utterances which constitute a clear and present danger to the sustenance of democracy in Nigeria and to peace and tranquility in Rivers State.”
Furthermore, the PDP appealed to the Federal Government and the national leadership of the APC to rein in Okocha and prevent him from further jeopardizing democratic norms and peace in the state.
In closing, Ologunagba called for international attention to Okocha’s actions, warning of potential repercussions on national security: “The international community should also take note of the reckless outburst of this individual whose action and utterances are capable of negatively affecting the overall security of the country.”
As tensions escalate, stakeholders await responses from both the APC leadership and the federal authorities on the unfolding situation in Rivers State.
