Locked Out: New Rivers LG chairman blocked from HQ access, cites police orders

Darlington Orji, one of the newly sworn-in caretaker chairmen for local government areas in Rivers State, has reported being barred from accessing the Ikwerre Local Government Area (LGA) headquarters by security agents on Wednesday.

Orji, speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today program, described the situation he encountered upon attempting to assume office: “Upon swearing in today, we were asked to resume so that we can swear in our members. I got to Ikwerre Local Government Council and I saw that it’s being barricaded by security agents, the police to be very precise.”

He further explained, “I asked a question and they said they were acting on the orders of the Inspector General of Police.”

Orji expressed his compliance with the security measures while highlighting his intention to uphold law and order: “That is the situation. I couldn’t access the council because I do not want to break the law. My responsibility is to ensure that there is law and order and to make sure that my people are protected.”

Regarding the tenure dispute, Orji noted the precedent set by the former chairman of Ikwerre LGA, Samuel Nwanosike: “The former chairman of Ikwerre LGA, Samuel Nwanosike, was first appointed caretaker chairman for about nine months before he was elected as LG chairman, and so he has no moral right to kick against the appointment of caretaker chairmen.”

The police intervention at the council secretariats across the state was initiated following a tenure expiration crisis involving former LGA chairmen loyal to Governor Fubara’s predecessor, Nyesom Wike. This development has been marred by unrest, resulting in reported fatalities.

Orji concluded by stating, “We are working on it and we will see what to do about it,” emphasizing his commitment to resolving the standoff peacefully.

The unfolding situation underscores ongoing tensions and administrative challenges in Rivers State following the recent political transitions.
