Australian swimming queen Cate Campbell announces retirement

In a heartfelt decision that marks the end of an illustrious career, Australian swimming icon Cate Campbell has bid farewell to competitive swimming after failing to qualify for the upcoming Paris Olympics.

The announcement came just a week following her departure from the Australian Olympic Trials in Brisbane.

Campbell, renowned as one of Australia’s most decorated swimmers, expressed her emotions in a poignant social media post, stating, “It’s time to officially say goodbye to the dream I have had since I was 9 years old.”

Despite narrowly missing out on her fifth Olympic appearance after falling short in the 100m and 50m freestyle events, Campbell reflected on her journey with grace and pride.

The 32-year-old veteran of four Olympics leaves behind a legacy adorned with eight Olympic medals and a staggering seven world records. Her prowess in relay events, particularly the 4x100m freestyle relay, where she clinched gold in the last three Olympic Games, stands as a testament to her enduring impact on the sport.

Cate Campbell’s influence extends beyond her remarkable achievements in the pool. She has been a source of inspiration and mentorship, particularly to her younger sister Bronte, with whom she shared the Olympic stage multiple times. Their journey from childhood dreams to international stardom exemplifies the power of dedication and sisterhood in sports.

“When we were 7 and 9 years old, we sat in the back of the car planning on what we’d do if we ever went to an Olympic Games together,” Bronte Campbell fondly recalled in a tribute.

“Little did we imagine that we’d go to three Olympics, two Commonwealth Games and three World Championships together.”

Campbell’s final swim at the Brisbane trials, embraced by her teammates in a poignant moment, marked the conclusion of an era.

Tributes poured in from across the nation’s sporting community, celebrating her legacy as a trailblazer for women in sport.

Reflecting on her retirement, reigning freestyle world champion Mollie O’Callaghan remarked, “Cate has really set the standards for a lot of us women. She’s one of the most inspirational figures, in and out of the water.”

As Cate Campbell closes this chapter of her career, her impact on Australian swimming and her enduring legacy as a role model will continue to inspire generations to come.
