Tobi Amusan cleared to compete in Paris Olympics after CAS decision

The disciplinary tribunal of World Athletics has cleared Nigeria’s Tobi Amusan, 27, of charges related to missing three anti-doping tests within a 12-month period.

The decision allows the 100m hurdles world record holder to participate in the upcoming Paris Olympics.

Amusan, who set a world record of 12.12 seconds at the World Championships in Eugene, Oregon, in July 2022, faced these charges in July 2023.

The sport’s top court dismissed appeals against the decision to clear her of any doping offense on Friday.

However, the World Athletics and the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) had appealed the initial decision to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).

Despite their efforts, CAS upheld the decision, stating that while Amusan committed two filing failures, it did not confirm the existence of a third missed test within the specified period, which would have constituted a violation.

The CAS panel “unanimously acknowledged that the Athlete committed two filing failures but did not confirm the existence of a missed test, alleged by WA and WADA, which would have been the third Whereabouts Failure committed within a 12-month period.”

Amusan’s impressive career includes winning the world title following her record-setting performance in 2022.

Despite finishing sixth in the World Championships in Budapest last year, she remains a significant contender for the Paris Olympics.

According to World Athletics’ anti-doping rules, an athlete who fails to declare their whereabouts for a doping test on three occasions over a 12-month period faces a two-year ban. With this latest ruling, Amusan is cleared of such a suspension and is set to continue her athletic pursuits.
