Zamfara police apprehend state assembly member, district head for alleged banditry

The Zamfara State Police Command has made significant arrests in connection with ongoing efforts to combat banditry and insecurity within the state.

Among those apprehended are individuals of high profile, including a member of the state house of assembly and a former local government chairman.

Commissioner of Police Muhammad Dalijan disclosed this during a meeting with Thomas Parker, the officer in charge of the Counterterrorism Unit under the United Nations Office On Drugs and Crime (UNODC), held at the command headquarters in Gusau, the state capital.

Although specific names were not mentioned, CP Dalijan affirmed the arrest of these high-profile individuals in connection with banditry-related activities, underscoring the commitment of law enforcement agencies to address criminal elements within the state.

In addition to the arrests, CP Dalijan called upon the United Nations for assistance in establishing a forensic laboratory to enhance forensic analysis capabilities within Zamfara State.

He emphasized the need for resources and training to expedite investigations and prosecution processes against suspected criminals.

Highlighting collaborative efforts between security agencies and Community Protection Guards (CPGs), CP Dalijan noted a reduction in crime rates attributed to ongoing operations targeting suspected terrorists who have migrated from other regions.

In response, Thomas Parker affirmed the UN’s readiness to support Zamfara State in addressing insecurity concerns, following an appeal made by Governor Dauda Lawal.

As part of this support, the UNODC team conducted a three-day stakeholder engagement to assess the security situation and identify strategies for intervention.

The engagement aims to comprehensively understand the underlying causes and drivers of insecurity in Zamfara State, paving the way for tailored support and collaborative efforts to address the prevailing challenges.

As stakeholders collaborate to confront the menace of banditry, the state remains focused on restoring peace and stability for its citizens.
