Fubara vows resilience after Appeal Court ruling on Rivers Assembly

Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, assured residents on Friday that there is no cause for concern following the Appeal Court’s decision regarding the State House of Assembly crisis.

Speaking during an inspection of the Zonal Hospital reconstruction project in Bori Town, Fubara emphasized his commitment to delivering good governance despite recent judicial challenges.

“I want to assure every one of you and the good people of Rivers State, that we are not deterred. We have made our promises, we will continue to give you good governance, no matter how difficult it is,” he stated.

Court of Appeal Decision

On Thursday, the Court of Appeal in Abuja overturned an order by a Rivers High Court that had restrained Martin Amaewhule and 24 others from acting as lawmakers in the State Assembly.

The three-member appellate panel, led by Jimi Olukayode-Bada, ruled that the trial court lacked jurisdiction, as such matters are within the purview of the Federal High Court.

Governor Fubara, however, remains optimistic, stating, “But, like I said before, the worst is over. We are moving on to ensure that we continue to provide what is needed for the development of our state.”

Commitment to Development

Despite the assembly crisis, Fubara reiterated his commitment to fulfilling campaign promises, particularly in healthcare, education, and agriculture.

He highlighted the administration’s efforts to reconstruct and expand four zonal hospitals, emphasizing the importance of providing quality healthcare facilities for the people.

“When we met them [hospitals], their conditions were really bad. There was no accommodation for the medical officers, the doctors, the nurses, and we also added a mortuary to have a full package of what a hospital should be,” he noted.

Inspection Tour

During the inspection tour, Fubara expressed satisfaction with the contractors’ commitment to the projects, aligning with the administration’s vision. He assured that the completed facilities would meet the healthcare needs of the local population and align with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Fubara was accompanied by the State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Adaeze Ore, the State Commissioner for Agriculture, Hon. Victor Kii, and the Chairman of the Caretaker Committee of the Council, Marvin Yobana.

The governor concluded by quoting Psalm 23:5, underscoring the challenges faced by his administration but reaffirming his determination to overcome them and deliver the dividends of democracy to the people of Rivers State.
