In a dramatic turn of events, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Command of the Nigeria Police Force, in a joint operation with the military, successfully thwarted a brazen armed robbery at a bank in the Abaji area of Abuja.
The operation led to the arrest of three suspects and the death of two individuals, including a police operative and the gang leader.
The joint operation, led by the Commissioner of Police, Benneth Igweh, unfolded on Thursday, June 13.
According to a statement released by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh, the coordinated response was in reaction to a simultaneous attack on the Abaji Divisional Police Headquarters and First Bank PLC in Abaji at approximately 5:00 PM.
A group of 15 armed men, equipped with dynamites, attempted to breach the bank’s security. However, the prompt arrival of police and military personnel forced the robbers into a fierce gunfight. The intense exchange of gunfire resulted in the assailants fleeing, some with severe bullet wounds.
Three suspects were apprehended at the scene. They include Usman, identified as the gang leader, Nuhu Musa, 41, from Kogi State, and Muhammed Aminu, 25, from Abaji. One unidentified suspect was reportedly set ablaze by an irate mob after being neutralized by security forces.
Tragically, one police operative and the gang leader succumbed to their injuries and were pronounced dead upon arrival at the hospital. The remaining suspects are currently receiving medical treatment, and a search operation is underway to locate and apprehend those who fled with bullet injuries.
Commissioner Igweh praised the effectiveness of the joint operation and reiterated the commitment of the FCT Command to maintaining the security and safety of the residents of Abuja.
“The safety of the residents of FCT is non-negotiable,” he stated, emphasizing that efforts will continue to ensure the FCT remains uninhabitable for criminals.
