…says ‘we won’t rescind decision on school reopening’
Soji Ajibola, Ibadan
Oyo State Government has said it will not rescind its decision on the reopening of primary and secondary schools for graduating students, insisting that the students in the state will also go ahead to participate in the 2020 West African Senior School Certificate Examination.
Minister of Education, Malam Adamu Adamu, had last week announced that Unity Schools across the country would not take part in the 2020 West African Senior School Certificate Examination for the senior secondary School.
However, the state’s Commissioner for Education, Olasunkanmi Olaleye, in an interview said the directive was only applicable to the Unity Schools.
“Schools in Oyo State will remain open and also go on to write 2020 WASSCE, unless the examination body directs otherwise,” her said.
He disclosed that schools have reopened in Oyo State and were complying with the safety measures as advised by the National Centre for Disease Control.
He added that the directive by the minister of education was only applicable to the Federal schools.
The Commissioner concluded that pending an official directive or statement from the governor and WAEC, schools in the state would remain open in preparation for this year’s WASSCE.
He explained that the examination was part of educational development and could not be ignored.
Olaleye assured the public that the government was following safety protocols and waiting for a reaction from WAEC so that the state government could assess the situation.
