Again, Rivers Assembly overrides Gov Fubara, passes Unified Local Government Amendment Law

In a decisive move, the Rivers State House of Assembly has once again exercised its legislative authority by vetoing Governor Siminalayi Fubara and consolidating several local government amendment laws into a unified statute.

The consolidation combines the Rivers State Local Government Amendment Laws of 2015, 2023, and 2024, addressing various discrepancies in previous amendments.

During the plenary session, Speaker Martin Amaewhule emphasized the importance of maintaining focus amidst distractions, urging members to disregard the governor’s assertion that they are non-existent, as he lacks the legal authority to make such declarations.

Instead, he encouraged lawmakers to remain dedicated to their responsibilities and ensure quality representation for their constituencies.

Joining the Speaker’s sentiments, Majority Leader Hon. Major Jack condemned Governor Fubara’s remarks as disrespectful and urged his fellow legislators to stay resolute in their duties despite the governor’s provocations.

The Assembly’s decisive action comes in the wake of Governor Fubara’s criticism of their conduct towards his administration, where he asserted that their legislative existence is contingent upon his recognition, as per the Peace Accord initiated by President Bola Tinubu.

This development unfolds amidst growing tensions between the governor and the legislative body, with the recent call by the APC Caretaker Chairman in the state for the resumption of impeachment proceedings against Governor Fubara.

The political landscape in Rivers State remains fraught with conflict as both sides continue to assert their respective authorities, raising questions about the future of governance in the state.
