Timaya opens up about struggle with drug addiction, plans for new album

In a recent interview with The Beat 99.9 FM, Lagos, Nigerian music sensation Timaya revealed his battle with drug addiction during the COVID-19 lockdown in 2020. The ‘Dem Mama’ crooner shared his tough fight against the powerful psychoactive drug known as Molly, emphasizing the illusions it created and the toll it took on his life.

Timaya disclosed, “Breaking off from drugs was hell; it was a tough fight.” He attributed his introduction to drugs to the lockdown period, narrating how the euphoria induced by the substance led to financial losses, job terminations, and weight loss.

“When I lost a lot of money, I realized I needed to stop, and I got kicked out from jobs, contract,” he added.

The artist mentioned the detrimental effects on his immune system, making it challenging to concentrate on business or engage with partners. Timaya took steps to recover, including traveling abroad to isolate himself from the effects of the drugs.

He released the song ‘Cold Outside’ on October 14, 2021, to share his experience and emphasize the impact of drug addiction on his life. Timaya responded to concerns from fans about his well-being during that time and acknowledged the visible effects, prompting him to confront the issue.

Looking ahead, Timaya announced plans for a new album titled ‘Gladiator,’ set to be released in April 2023. While the album is ready, he kept details about featured artists and the number of tracks under wraps.

Discussing the current state of the music industry, Timaya expressed concerns about genuine talent taking a backseat to financial considerations. He highlighted the priority of money over artistic expression, calling for an environment where artists can freely express themselves without external pressures.

Timaya criticized record labels that limit artists from releasing music they believe in, emphasizing the importance of creativity and individuality. He urged industry professionals to foster an atmosphere that encourages authentic expression.

The artist believes that social media and the internet provide a platform for artists to gain recognition and international acclaim. He stressed the significance of creating timeless songs that endure over time.

In terms of his love life, Timaya admitted to being in a relationship but disclosed his preference not to date Nigerian women. He expressed the belief that dating someone with a similar background lacks excitement, comparing it to a toxic dynamic. Timaya clarified that his decision is not a personal issue with Nigerian women but stems from his desire for a relationship with more vitality.
