In a concerted effort to tackle the multifaceted challenges impeding the socio-economic development of Northern Nigeria, the Northern Governors’ Forum (NGF) convened its second meeting, addressing critical issues ranging from education to insecurity.
During the gathering held in Kaduna State on Tuesday, the chairman of the group, Governor Yahaya Inuwa, underscored a sobering reality: Northern Nigeria bears the highest burden of out-of-school children globally. This alarming statistic poses a significant impediment to the region’s progress and must be addressed urgently.
The meeting served as a platform for reflection and action, building upon discussions initiated during the inaugural meeting in December 2023. At that time, concerns over insecurity, environmental degradation, and educational deficiencies were at the forefront of the agenda.
Governor Uba Sani of Kaduna State reiterated the imperative for a unified approach among northern governors in combating insecurity. He stressed the need for coordinated efforts to confront the scourge of banditry, terrorism, and kidnapping, which continue to plague the region.
Chairing the forum, Governor Inuwa expressed solidarity with states grappling with severe security challenges, including Kaduna, Niger, Zamfara, Katsina, and Plateau. He emphasized that economic development serves as a linchpin in the fight against insecurity, emphasizing the pivotal role of infrastructure development and education in unlocking the region’s potential.
Recognizing the interconnectedness of environmental conservation, sustainable agriculture, and responsible resource management, the closed-door session deliberated on holistic strategies to address these pressing issues.
The governors emphasized the need for proactive measures to safeguard livelihoods and preserve the region’s natural heritage.
The meeting concluded with a commitment to tangible action, underscoring the forum’s dedication to charting a path towards prosperity and security for Northern Nigeria.
By prioritizing education, infrastructure development, and environmental sustainability, the NGF aims to overcome the myriad challenges facing the region and usher in a new era of growth and resilience.
