Following the abduction of 317 schoolgirls of Government Girls Secondary School, Jangebe, on Friday, Zamfara State Government has shut all boarding schools in the state.
Governor Bello Matawalle, who briefed newsmen at the Government House, Gusau, on Friday, said the schools must remain shut until the security situation in the state has improved.
Matawalle disclosed that following the abduction of the schoolgirls in Jangebe, some parents had gone to withdraw their children from the school.
He said, “We have no alternative than to close down all boarding schools so as to douse the fear being entertained by parents and guardians due to the recent abduction of the schoolgirls in Jangebe.
“We are, however, doing everything possible to rescue the children and reunite them with their families.
“We have already drafted two helicopters with a view to locating the children and rescue them.
The governor stated that out of a total student population of over 500 in the school, 317 had gone missing.
But he assured the parents of the students that they would soon have their children back, maintaining that the peace accord initiated by his administration could still be used to solve the insecurity problem in the state.
