The Supreme Court on Friday upheld the deregistration of 74 political parties by the Independent Electoral Commission.
Delivering judgment, the apex court upheld an earlier verdict of the Court of Appeal backing the deregistration of the National Unity Party and 73 others.
Recall that INEC, last year, deregistered the 74 political parties for being unable to win any election during the 2019 general elections.
Justice Adamu Jauro, who read the judgment of the Supreme Court, on Friday, said the deregistration of NUP and the 73 other political parties by INEC was lawful.
The apex court ruled that INEC deregistered the 74 parties in line with the laws and compliance with the extant provisions of the Constitution and Electoral Act.
