Foreign Affairs Minister urges probe into Perm Sec’s alleged sexual assault

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has been rocked by allegations of sexual assault against Mrs. Simisola Fajemirokun Ajayi by the Permanent Secretary, Ambassador Ibrahim Lamuwa, prompting Foreign Affairs Minister, Ambassador Yusuf Tuggar, to take action.

In a letter dated 27th May 2024 addressed to the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation (HoS), Ambassador Tuggar expressed deep concern over the allegations and officially lodged a complaint against Ambassador Lamuwa.

The letter, titled “RE: OFFICIAL COMPLAINT REGARDING SEXUAL HARASSMENT OF MRS. SIMISOLA FAJEMIROKUN AJAYI BY AMBASSADOR IBRAHIM ADAMU LAMUWA (PERMANENT SECRETARY MINISTRY OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS),” highlighted the seriousness of the issue and urged a thorough investigation.

Ambassador Tuggar emphasized the need for the matter to be handled promptly and appropriately, offering the ministry’s full cooperation to facilitate the investigation process.

He underscored the gravity of the allegations, noting that Ambassador Lamuwa’s conduct has allegedly extended to harassing other female staff within the ministry.

He said, “Bearing in mind the gravity of the matter, I feel it necessary to draw your attention to it and ask that you handle it accordingly.

“Please find attached a copy of the complaint I received via email. May I also assure you that I remain available to provide you with any assistance required in discharging your responsibilities.”

When contacted to comment on the matter, the Special Adviser, Media and Communications Strategy to the Foreign Affairs Minister, Alkassim Abdulkadir affirmed the story as he simply replied with, ‘It’s true’.

The Foreign Affairs Minister’s intervention underscores the ministry’s commitment to upholding workplace ethics and ensuring a safe and respectful environment for all employees.

The letter serves as a call to action for the relevant authorities to address the issue swiftly and decisively.

As the investigation unfolds, stakeholders await further developments, hoping for a fair and just resolution to the allegations of sexual harassment within the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
