Focus on food security ‘stomach infrastructure’, Obasanjo urges leaders amid hardship

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has emphasized the critical importance of prioritizing food security, particularly through the concept of ‘stomach infrastructure’, urging leaders to concentrate on addressing the basic needs of their citizens.

Obasanjo made these remarks during a visit to Sokoto, where he attended the official unveiling of 136 housing units acquired by the Sokoto State Government at the cost of N1.820 billion.

These housing units are intended to be allocated to low-income earners and other residents of the state on an owner-occupier basis, aiming to address the pressing need for adequate shelter.

During his address, Obasanjo underscored the significance of ensuring food security as a fundamental priority, stating, “Food security ‘stomach infrastructure’ was top while personal and health security took the lesser rankings.”

He commended the efforts of Governor Ahmed Aliyu Sokoto, acknowledging the strides made in various sectors including transportation, road construction, agriculture, and housing projects.

Obasanjo praised Governor Sokoto’s leadership qualities, remarking, “Your strong, energetic, and resilient qualities in leadership have made you to get it all within the space of time of your one year.”

Obasanjo expressed optimism about Governor Sokoto’s prospects for reelection, attributing it to the governor’s impactful initiatives and achievements within a relatively short period.

He also lauded Senator Aliyu Wamakko and Sultan Sa’ad Abubakar for their contributions to the development of Sokoto State, describing Wamakko as a commendable mentor and Governor Sokoto as a worthy mentee.

He stated, “I will say Wamakko remain a good mentor who has gotten a good mentee in the person of the governor.”

In his response, Governor Aliyu Sokoto highlighted the state government’s commitment to fulfilling its campaign promises by delivering projects aimed at improving the welfare and living standards of Sokoto residents.

He outlined the government’s investment in various sectors, including housing, road construction, empowerment programs, water supply, agriculture, and healthcare.

Governor Sokoto reiterated the government’s determination to continue its developmental efforts, emphasizing the importance of providing modern facilities and amenities across the state.

He expressed gratitude to Former President Obasanjo for gracing the occasion and participating in the state’s historic milestone, stating, “We are determined to continue developing the state for proper repositioning and providing state of the arts adjourning facilities at all sites including Islamiyya schools, markets, play ground among others.”

The visit of Former President Obasanjo to Sokoto serves as a testament to the collaborative efforts between past and present leaders in advancing the socio-economic development of the state and enhancing the well-being of its citizens.
