Today, June 12, 2024, marked a tragic turn of events along the Enugu-Onitsha federal highway at Ugwu Onyeama in Enugu State, where at least 25 individuals lost their lives in a devastating incident involving multiple vehicles.
Eyewitnesses recounted a horrific scene where a truck, allegedly unable to brake, careened into a line of stopped vehicles, both private cars and commercial buses, at a hilly section of the road near a Nigerian Army checkpoint.
“A trailer plying the newly constructed lane failed brake and smashed more than 10 cars both private cars and commercial buses. The army checkpoint at this axis continues to claim lives. More than 25 people lost their lives instantly and many rushed to the hospital,” one eyewitness lamented.
The incident, occurring amidst Democracy Day commemorations, has sent shockwaves through the community, with emergency services rushing to the scene to attend to the injured and transport casualties to hospitals.
Authorities are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the tragic event, as families and friends of the victims grapple with the sudden loss.
