The vice chancellor of Crescent University Abeokuta, Prof. Ibraheem Gbajabiamila has charged the Nigerian government to allocate more funds for education and research for future development of the country.
He made this appeal appeal during a research writing workshop for the final year students of the institution, organized by Centre for Research and Inventions.
In his opening declaration of the programme, the vice chancellor applauded efforts of the centre director, Prof. Gbolahan Babalola and the planning team for making the programme come to reality.
In his lecture, Prof. Adebayo Osagie Shittu, from Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, tasked students to read, consult widely and keep their notes, as inspiration could come anytime.
On the nitty-gritty of research writing, Prof Shittu described the subject as an art in which a researcher needs time, determination, skill, mentoring and purpose to succeed.
Another scholar from Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta,Dr Shakirullahi Oladele Akinbode stressed that research “strengthens the work of any university”, and added that “research means that you don’t know what you are willing to know”.
In his view, Dr Akeem Akanni from Olabisi Onabajo University, Ago Iwoye, posited that ” research is about moving knowledge forward and this has to be done in an orderly and organized manner” and concluded that research writing must be simple, while sources of information should be properly cited.
Earlier in his welcome address, Director, Centre for Research and Inventions, Prof. Gbolahan Babalola said ” the outline of the deliverables during this two-day workshop has been comprehensively designed to orientate our final-year students on the basics of research protocols needed for their research projects.”
He implored “student participants to take full advantage of this effort of the university as part of the desire to deliver high quality university education for functional leadership manpower development”.
Prof. Babalola described the programme as a product of hard work by Research, Education and Linkages Committee (RELIC) chaired by Dr Obafemi Arogundade.
