In the latest rankings unveiled by EduRank, Nigeria’s absence from the top 10 universities in Africa is notable, signaling a gap in academic prominence within the continent.
EduRank, known for its comprehensive social media analytics in the education sector, recently released its list of the top universities in Africa for 2024. The rankings were determined based on criteria such as research outputs, non-academic prominence, and alumni influence.
Drawing from extensive data analysis, including 24.5 million citations from 2.16 million academic publications across 1,104 universities in Africa, EduRank conducts thorough statistical analyses to generate comparative rankings at national, regional, and global levels.
Despite Nigeria’s significant presence in the higher education landscape, no Nigerian university secured a spot in the top 10 rankings for 2024.
The University of Ibadan (UI) leads the pack as the highest-ranked Nigerian institution, occupying the 13th position in Africa and 1057th globally. Following closely is the University of Lagos (UNILAG), positioned at 23rd in Africa and 1,431st globally.

While these institutions demonstrate commendable academic standing, their absence from the top echelons of the ranking highlights areas for improvement and strategic enhancement.
At the pinnacle of the list sits the University of Cape Town, affirming its status as the premier educational institution in Africa according to EduRank’s assessment.
