Court fines Kano government N10m for violating deposed Emir Bayero’s rights

In a significant legal development, the Federal High Court in Kano has imposed a fine of N10 million on the Kano State Government for violating the rights of deposed Emir Aminu Bayero amidst the ongoing emirate tussle.

The ruling was handed down by Justice Liman Mohammed following a case brought before the court by Aminu Baba Dan Agundi, a prominent kingmaker in Kano.

The judgment affirmed Bayero’s jurisdiction to be heard in matters concerning his fundamental human rights.

The legal battle stems from a decision by the Kano State Government to restrain Bayero and four other emirs from parading themselves as emirs through an order for substituted service issued by the Kano State High Court.

This move was contested by Agundi on behalf of Bayero, arguing that it infringed upon the former emir’s rights.

During the proceedings, Justice Mohammed emphasized the importance of upholding fundamental human rights, stating that no entity, including the state government, should act in a manner that undermines these rights.

In his ruling, Justice Liman Mohammed declared that the Kano State Government’s actions were in violation of Emir Aminu Bayero’s rights and imposed a fine of N10 million as a deterrent against future violations.

The case underscores the ongoing power struggle within the Kano emirate, with legal battles continuing to unfold over the rightful position and recognition of traditional leaders in the state.

The Kano State Government has yet to comment publicly on the court’s ruling or the imposed fine. However, legal experts anticipate further developments as both sides navigate the complex legal landscape surrounding the emirate’s leadership.

For Emir Aminu Bayero and his supporters, the court’s decision marks a significant legal victory in their quest to uphold his rights amidst the turbulent emirate dispute.
