In a decisive victory, Senator Douye Diri of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has secured triumph in the off-cycle Bayelsa State governorship election held on Saturday, November 11, 2023. The conclusive outcome was revealed after the meticulous collation of results from all eight local government areas within the State on Monday afternoon.
The state’s Returning Officer, Prof. Faruq Kuta, officially brought the electoral process to a close around 12:42 pm on Monday, concluding the final phase of collation nearly 48 hours after the polls closed in the oil-rich South-South State.
Prof. Kuta declared Senator Diri as the winner.
Incumbent Governor Diri demonstrated a commanding lead by securing victories in six out of the eight local government areas. His primary rival, Timipre Sylva of the All Progressives Congress (APC), managed to secure victories in only two LGAs.
The LGAs where Governor Diri emerged victorious include Kolokuma/Opokuma, Ogbia, Yenegoa, Sagbama, Nembe, Ekeremor, Brass, and Southern Ijaw.
The PDP candidate clinched the election with a substantial margin of 65,088 votes, firmly establishing his dominance over his APC counterpart and leaving other candidates trailing far behind.
This electoral outcome solidifies Senator Douye Diri’s mandate for another term as the Governor of Bayelsa State, signaling a continuation of his leadership in the region. The win reflects the preferences of voters across diverse localities and underscores the political landscape in Bayelsa State.
