Following the attack on Borno State Governor, Babagana Zulum, by suspected Boko Haram insurgents, the House of Representatives, on Friday, reiterated its earlier call on President Muhammadu Buhari to sack the service chiefs.
House Minority Caucus in a statement signed by the House Minority Leader, Ndudi Elumelu, urged the Presidency to implement the recent resolution passed by both chambers of the National Assembly asking President Buhari to sack the Service Chiefs.
The statement said the Caucus was alarmed by Wednesday’s attack on the convoy of the Borno governor, insisting that the sad incident had again reinforced the urgent need to review the nation’s security architecture.
“We, the opposition lawmakers, hereby in the strongest terms, restate the call on President Muhammadu Buhari to honour the resolution of the National Assembly and immediately remove the Service Chiefs and bring in new hands to effectively confront the security challenges confronting our nation,” it said.
The Caucus noted that the attack on the Borno governor and other dastardly activities of the insurgents in various parts of the nation had further reinforced the urgent need to bring in new hands with fresh ideas to handle the nation’s security architecture.
An aide to the governor confirmed that the convoy was attacked when Zulum was returning from Baga, where he had distributed food items to Internally Displaced Persons.
Acting Director, Army Public Relations, Col. Sagir Musa, disclosed in a statement on Thursday in Abuja that the Nigerian Army had commenced investigation into the attack on the governor’s convoy.“Although, details of the unfortunate incident are sketchy and under investigation, efforts are ongoing to comb the area where the incident occurred with a view to tracking down and dealing decisively with the attackers,” he said.
