AFCON 2025 Postponed: Tournament rescheduled to early 2026

The anticipated 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) has been postponed by six months due to scheduling conflicts with the expanded 32-team Club World Cup.

Originally set to take place in Morocco in June, AFCON 2025 will now be rescheduled to early 2026 to accommodate the overlapping tournaments.

The announcement was made by the organizers of AFCON, who acknowledged the logistical challenges posed by the simultaneous scheduling of both events.

CAF’s general secretary, Veron Mosengo-Omba, underscored the importance of prioritizing player welfare amidst these scheduling dilemmas.

Mosengo-Omba stressed on the need to consider various factors and consult with stakeholders to ensure that the rescheduled dates align with the best interests of the players.

He also acknowledged the complexities involved in coordinating such high-profile tournaments, referring to scheduling as a “nightmare” for all parties involved.

The decision to postpone AFCON 2025 reflects a commitment to addressing logistical concerns and ensuring a smooth and successful tournament.

By rescheduling the event to early 2026, organizers aim to mitigate potential conflicts and provide players with adequate time to prepare and participate in both the Club World Cup and AFCON without undue strain.

As preparations continue for AFCON 2026, stakeholders will work collaboratively to finalize the new dates and ensure a seamless tournament experience for players, fans, and organizers alike.
