Senate passes bill for 300% salary increase for CJN, judicial officers

The Senate has unanimously approved a bill aimed at significantly enhancing the salaries, allowances, and fringe benefits of the Chief Justice of the Federation (CJN), Justice Olukayode Ariwoola, and other judicial office holders in Nigeria.

The bill, which proposes a remarkable 300% pay increase, successfully passed its third reading during Wednesday’s session.

The approval came after the Senate Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights, and Legal Matters, chaired by Mohammed Monguno, presented its report to the Senate floor.

In endorsing the bill, Senator Monguno highlighted the critical importance of providing adequate remuneration to judicial officers to enable them to focus on their professional responsibilities without financial constraints.

According to Senator Monguno, the proposed salary increment aims to enhance the professionalism and decision-making abilities of judicial officers, while also fostering public trust in the impartiality and integrity of the judiciary.

He emphasized that fair compensation is essential for maintaining the highest standards of judicial conduct and upholding the rule of law in the country.

Furthermore, Senator Monguno reassured his colleagues that the proposed salary increase had been factored into the 2024 Appropriation Act, ensuring the financial feasibility of the bill’s implementation.

The Senate’s decision to pass the bill underscores its commitment to promoting the welfare and professional development of judicial officers, recognizing their indispensable role in upholding justice and safeguarding the rights of all citizens.

As the bill progresses, stakeholders anticipate its enactment into law and the positive impact it will have on the judiciary’s effectiveness and integrity.
