Why I’ve not celebrated birthday as governor —Diri

Governor of Bayelsa State, Senator Douye Diri, has enjoined his appointees, political associates, friends and well-wishers to join him in praying for the peace, unity and development of the state on his birthday on June 4.

Governor Diri, who turns 65 tomorrow (Tuesday), said since assuming office in February 2020, he has not engaged in public celebration of his birth as he does not believe in spending public funds on a personal celebration.

He stated this in a statement issued by Daniel Alabrah, the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor of Bayelsa State on
Monday, June 3, 2024.

He also said the economic situation in the country and the developmental challenges of the state require that all hands are on deck rather than spending scarce resources on frivolous celebrations.

The Bayelsa governor advised those who want to celebrate him in the media to jettison the idea and rather divert such resources toward human capital development as well as in promoting the unity and peace of the state.

He said his administration remained single-minded and focused on its agenda of effective transformation of the state in line with its vision of a shared prosperity for all Bayelsans.

Governor Diri thanked people of the state for their unrelenting support and urged them to continue to pray for the success of his administration.
