Members of staff of the University of Ibadan on Wednesday blocked all gates leading to the institution in protest against alleged imposition of another vice chancellor by the incumbent, Prof Olayinka Idowu.
The protesters kicked against the alleged imposition of the current Deputy Vice-Chancellor of the institution, Prof. Kayode Adebowale as the next Vice-Chancellor of the institution.
Multiple individuals and unions in the varsity have alleged that the current Vice-Chancellor, Prof Olayinka was putting doing everything to ensure the emergence of his anointed candidate, Adebowale.’
It was learnt the protest by the workers was brought about by the release of the name of the six candidates shortlisted for the position out of those jostling for the seat.
Adebowale was one of those listed.The workers blocked all entry and exit points into the institution, chanting various war songs such as “We no go gree oo, we no go gree, imposition we no go gree.”They also held placards with various inscriptions like: “Impose Adebowale and shut down UI for six years, ” “We shall never work with Alatise again,” among others.
The institution was on total lockdown as workers have taken over the entire premises, protesting that Olayinka was ‘putting no stone untouched to ensure the emergence of his anointed candidate, Adebowale.’
The protest was not unconnected with the release of the name of the six candidates who made the shortlist out of those jostling for the seat. One of those who names was announced was Prof. Adebowale
