Shockwaves as 40 directors fail qualifying exam for permanent secretary positions in Nigeria

In a significant development, it has been reported that no fewer than 40 directors have failed the qualifying examination for appointment to the prestigious position of permanent secretaries in Nigeria.

The examination, which took place on May 27, 2024, saw a total of 92 directors listed to sit for it.

Shockingly, 40 directors scored below 50 per cent, signaling a failure, while three were absent, and one couldn’t complete the exam.

According to our source, this setback has prompted a reevaluation of the selection process.

A memo dated May 28, 2024, from the Office of the Head of Service, indicated that the next test will be an ICT-based examination, suggesting a shift in the assessment methodology.

This news comes amidst the Federal Government’s initiative, announced earlier through the Office of the Head of Civil Service, to fill existing and forthcoming vacancies for permanent secretaries across various states and zones in Nigeria.

In a circular addressed to key stakeholders, including the Chief of Staff to the President and the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, the Head of Civil Service, Folashade Yemi-Esan, outlined the criteria for eligibility.

The circular emphasized that only directors who attained the position of substantive director on or before January 1, 2022, would be considered in the process.

Additionally, candidates must meet certain conditions, including being from specified states or geopolitical zones and not retiring before December 31, 2025. Notably, officers undergoing disciplinary procedures are excluded from participation.

This development underscores the importance of rigorous selection processes in ensuring qualified leadership within the civil service as the government works to fill crucial administrative roles across the country.

Stay tuned for further updates on this evolving story.
