According to a recent survey, Nigeria ranked 150th out of all nations for internet speed.
The country of West Africa also measured a download speed for fixed broadband of 9.70 megabits per second (mbps).
According to the latest study, 2022 Speedtest Global Index, which was released by the US-based internet speed monitoring company, Ookla in the second quarter of 2022, MTN Nigeria owned 38.9% of mobile users in Nigeria.
The wireless operator had 74.1 million subscribers for the time period, which was 61% more customers than its nearest competitor, Airtel Nigeria, which had 46 million subscribers overall at the end of June.
MTN lagged behind Airtel Nigeria in mobile performance, nevertheless. Compared to MTN’s average download and upload speeds of 26.30 Mbps and 9.13 Mbps, Airtel had median download speeds of 30.35 Mbps and upload speeds of 10.28 Mbps.
According to the research, these speeds are anticipated to increase as a result of major network infrastructure investments made by both companies, totaling N208.5 billion ($502 million).
One benefit of that investing is an increase in 4G availability. In Q2 2022, MTN has 83.8% of 4G availability compared to Airtel’s 779.8%.
Various African countries
With an average mobile internet download speed of 36.11 Mbps, South Africa was ranked 96th in the survey as the top internet service provider on the continent. That was less than the 69.14 Mbps global benchmark for broadband download speed.
With a speed of 45.46 Mbps, Egypt, which came in at number 83 on the list, was followed by Gabon and Burkina Faso.
Even though more than 13 nations are already conducting trials, over 40 countries still need to set the groundwork for the construction of 5G spectrums.
Such restrictions would hinder the development of an inclusive global digital economy, which the research highlighted requires stable and rapid internet connection to accelerate growth that might readily reach the underserved.
According to Sylwia Kechiche, principal industry analyst, enterprise at Ookla, because South African carriers had 5G networks installed, they were able to surpass other operators, illustrating the impact that 5G has on overall performance.
With a median download speed of 65.95 Mbps, MTN South Africa is far ahead of the competition despite load shedding issues, according to the analyst, who placed Vodacom South Africa second with a median download speed of 48.70 Mbps.
If we exclude 5G from the equation, she continued, Safaricom Kenya was the fastest operator among the examined operators.
According to the study, the two most often reported issues were poor signal and no access to mobile internet.
