Immediate past President-General of Ohaneze Ndi-Igbo, Chief John Nwodo, has kicked against the non-inclusion of an Igbo in the appointment of the new service chiefs announced by the Presidency on Tuesday.
President Muhammadu Buhari had approved the appointment of the new service chiefs after sacking the former ones he appointed in 2015, following persistent perennial pressures from Nigerians to bring in fresh hands that could effectively tackle the festering national problem of insurgency, banditry, kidnapping and other crimes across the country.
The newly appointed service chiefs are: Major-General Leo Irabor as Chief of Defence Staff; Major-General I. Attahiru as Chief of Army Staff; Rear Admiral A.Z Gambo as Chief of Naval Staff; and Air-Vice Marshal I.O Amao as Chief of Air Staff.
But in his reaction to the new service chiefs’ list, the Igbo leader, in a chat with FirstNews correspondent, expressed his disappointment with President Buhari over his newly announced service chiefs, saying the development portrayed the Igbo as unfit to head any of the nation’s security service.
“Gen. Buhari, thanks for making us in Igbo land feel, once more, that we are not fit to head any of the security services,” Nwodo wrote in his terse message to FirstNews correspondent.
