Cholera Outbreak: UNICEF urges Nigeria to safeguard schools

In response to the recent surge in cholera cases across Lagos and several states in Nigeria, UNICEF has issued a pressing call for enhanced measures to protect school children and prevent disruptions to the academic calendar.

Celine Lafoucrier, Chief of UNICEF’s Lagos Field Office, emphasized the critical impact of cholera outbreaks on children and young people in a statement released on Monday.

She highlighted the heightened health risks faced by these vulnerable groups, particularly those attending schools, due to their susceptibility to severe dehydration and increased mortality rates associated with cholera.

“There is an urgent need for robust sanitation practices, improved access to clean water, and regular handwashing with soap and water to curb the spread of cholera within schools,” Lafoucrier stressed.

She further underscored the necessity for nationwide awareness campaigns to educate the public about cholera outbreaks and the essential preventive measures required to mitigate its spread.

The call from UNICEF comes amidst growing concerns over the impact of cholera on educational institutions and underscores the organization’s commitment to safeguarding the health and well-being of Nigeria’s children during this public health crisis.
