…warn ‘action can result in doom for Nigeria’
Forum of the Peoples Democratic Party State Chairmen, on Friday, called on the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission to halt its probe of the party over alleged mismanagement of about N10billion party funds.
Recall that EFCC reportedly invited senior officials of the PDP following an allegation leveled against the party’s leadership by Kassim Afegbua, a chieftain of the party, to explain how N10bn was allegedly diverted.
But the PDP forum urged EFCC to stop the probe.
The Forum stated this in a statement on Friday titled ‘EFCC: Position of forum of PDP state chairmen’, signed by the its Public Relations Officer, Francis Orogu.
“The Forum, having consulted among its members, wishes to state… that the monitoring of political parties funds is the legal and constitutional duty of INEC (Independent National Electoral Commission) and not that of EFCC,” the statement read in part.
The Forum also argued that INEC had not raised any issue concerning the management of funds in the PDP and the EFCC has not in its history, questioned the management of finances in any political party in Nigeria.
The statement added, “The Forum, therefore, advises EFCC to, without delay, terminate this unholy voyage that can only lead the country to doom.
“TheEFCC is further advised to restrict itself to its core mandate as provided for in its statutes.”
