The police in Lagos have defended the use of force against youths in Ibeju Lekki area of the state.
State Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin in a statement on Thursday said that the Wednesday incident occurred after policemen arrested a suspect.
Hundeyin said when youths in the area got wind of the suspect’s arrest, they mobilised themselves to rescue the individual who is currently in custody.
The PPRO said the mob arrived at the scene late, but while returning, they sighted two armed personnel guarding a company and decided to attack them.
“The irate youths, numbering over 200, decided to descend on the policemen, pelting them with stones and destroyed a Lexus SUV within,” he said.
The police added that when it became clear that the angry mob was hell-bent on lynching the officers, they “justifiably used their firearms.”
One of the attackers, who was shot, is currently being treated in a hospital.
Hundeyin added that the police operatives were able to protect themselves and prevent further wanton destruction.
“Normalcy has returned to the area. Investigation has commenced to arrest other fleeing attackers, after which they will be prosecuted,” the statement added.
