Authorities of the Benue State University say students are indebted to the institution to the tune of N1.82billion.
The university said that the students accumulated the huge debt over the years due to their refusal to pay school fees.
BSU Vice-Chancellor, Prof Tor Iorapuu, disclosed this on Monday during a chat with newsmen in Makurdi, the state capital.
Iorapuu added that the N1.82billion was accumulated by the students between 2010 and 2019.
He noted that within the short period of time he became the vice-chancellor, the management had been insisting on doing things the right way, resulting in some remarkable achievements.
The BSU vice-chancellor said, “We met a lot of rot in the institution. These few months we insisted on doing the right thing, we have achieved remarkable improvements.
“We have a population of 24,135 students and out of this number, 19,818 are now registered, representing 82 per cent.
“This had not been achieved in a very long time.
“997 paid but did not register, representing four per cent which includes some 300 and 400 level students, while about 3,320 students have not paid at all and have been attending lectures, representing 13 per cent of the population.
“This is worrisome. How do we raise funds to fix facilities in the school? We do not get any subvention from the state government apart from the payment of salaries.
He added, “Parents give their children/wards money and they spend it on other things.
“Then they turn around and complain of not seeing their results.
“I urge students to preoccupy themselves with their lectures and prompt release of their results rather than engage on social media, heaping insults on the management of the school and the same institution they want to issue them certificates at the completion of their studies.”
