The Senate has rejected the nomination of Lauretta Onochie to serve as the Independent National Electoral Commission’s (INEC’s) National Commissioner.
Onochie was rejected by the federal lawmakers on Tuesday.
The Chairman of the Committee on INEC, Kabiru Gaya, in his report said Onochie did not satisfy the provisions of the Federal Character Principles.
The Senate at the committee of the whole subsequently voted against her nomination.
Onochie is currently the social media aide to President Muhammadu Buhari.
The president nominated and forwarded her name alongside others to the Senate to confirm as INEC national commissioner.
The nomination was strongly opposed by the opposition Peoples Democratic Party and other Nigerians, who claimed that she is a member of the ruling All Progressives Congress.
Onochie had, however, denied being a member of the APC, claiming that she ceased to be a member of the party after the 2019 general elections.
