Over 268,758 persons have so far signed a petition for President Muhammadu Buhari and other top officials of his government to be charged over the killing of peaceful protesters at the Lekki toll gate in Lagos on Tuesday.
The petitioners are pushing for Buhari and other top officials, especially of the Nigerian Army to be brought before the International Criminal Court for crimes against humanity.
As of 08:19 am on Thursday, exactly 268, 758 persons have signed the petition currently running on change.org
The initiator of the petition, Kayode Ogunfeibo, while speaking on Tuesday night when he started the petition on change.org, following the shooting of the protesters at Lekki toll gate, said, “Today in Lagos, Nigeria, the Nigerian Army started shooting peaceful protesters at Lekki Toll Gate.
“This is the latest in a long series of human rights abuses in Nigeria and as the Head of State of Nigeria President Mohammadu Buhari should be held directly responsible for this heinous crime against humanity.
“Under no circumstances should civilians be shot by soldiers in a civilised world and the perpetrators including the Army Chief of Staff General Buratai, should be brought to justice.”
Over 100, 000 signatures had been collected on change.org as of Wednesday.
“Ladies and Gentlemen, thank you so much for your support. We now have over 100,000 signatures and l am now taking steps to contact the Office of the Prosecutor at the International Criminal Court at The Hague Netherlands, to delivery the Petition for the Nigerian President to be charged and brought to justice for crimes against humanity,” Ogunfeibo said.
