In a disappointing turn of events, Nigeria’s aspirations for an International Feature Film Oscar at the 2024 Academy Awards have been dashed, with the country’s entry, “Mami Wata,” failing to secure a spot on the prestigious list.
Despite being nominated by the Nigerian Official Selection Committee (NOSC) and gaining recognition at the Sundance Festival, “Mami Wata” fell short when the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences revealed the shortlisted films from 15 countries.
The selected films include compelling entries such as Bhutan’s “The Monk and the Gun,” Armenia’s “Amerikatsi,” Denmark’s “The Promised Land,” and others that have captured the attention of the Academy.
The 96th Academy Awards, set to be broadcast live on March 10, 2024, from the Dolby Theatre at Ovation in Hollywood, will showcase a diverse range of international films, though Nigeria’s ‘Mami Wata’ will not be among them this year.
