Hundreds of Ijaw youths on Thursday shut down the Headquaters of the Niger Delta Development Commission Eastern By-Pass in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, to protest the failure of the Federal Government to constitute a board for the Niger Delta Development Commission.
The over 700 protesters under the aegis of the Ijaw Youths Council, were all dressed in the IYC’s uniform.
The youths hoisted the Green-Red-Blue IYC flag in front of the NDDC secretariat and stopped human and vehicular entry into the premises.
They installed two tents in front of the commission’s main entrance of the newly-commissioned complex, singing and dancing to solidarity songs.
IYC Assistant Secretary, Eastern Zone, Ibiso Harry, explained that the action was directed by the IYC President, Peter Igbifa, following the expiration of the deadline given to the Federal Government on the matter.
Policemen were seen at the complex monitoring the protesting youths, who vowed not to occupy the commission’s premises untill the Federal Government accede to their demand and inaugurate the NDDC board.
