Department of State Services says security operatives who carried out a search on the residence and office of Tukur Mamu, publisher of Desert Herald, found military equipment and huge cash in different currencies.
Mamu was arrested on Wednesday at the Malam Aminu Kano International Airport, Kano, upon his return from Egypt where he was detained on Tuesday for 24 hours by the authorities on his way to Saudi Arabia for lesser hajj.
Mamu, an aide to Ahmad Gumi, a popular Islamic cleric, has been involved in negotiations for the release of persons abducted on a train in Kaduna, in March 2022.
Confirming Mamu’s arrest on Wednesday, the DSS had said the publisher had questions to answer.
DSS, in a statement on Thursday by its spokesperson, Peter Afunanya, said incriminating materials were found during a search on Mamu’s house and office.
According to the statement, “So far, appropriate security agencies have executed valid search warrants on Mamu’s residence and office.
“During the processes, incriminating materials including military accoutrements were recovered.
“Other items include large amounts in different currencies and denominations as well as financial transaction instruments.
“While further investigations continue, Mamu will, sure, have a day in court.”
