Time and time again celebrities give us reasons to distrust their social media lifestyle. From cases of fraud, false declaration of non-existent assets, borrowing luxurious accessories and rides, buying clothes on credit, and wearing fake designer attires. You would think you’ve seen it all across the internet. But then there’s always the case of the common but always saddening cheating scandal which often time comes from those you least expect it to.
Word on the street this period is that the ‘Okay’ and ‘Ire’ crooner Adekunle Gold known widely as AG Baby, cheated on his wife Simisola who also doubles as the mother of his ten-month-old baby girl; Adejare and a lot of us are experiencing a lot of intense emotions really fast. This is because the “Gold couple” is the couple that takes delight in tantalizing their audience with cute couple pictures, videos, and heartwarming endearing statements. All of which goes a long way to project the image of a loving, perfect family with best friends who are genuinely obsessed with the promise of spending eternity together.
However, as with all things media-related, it’s beginning to seem that we might have been wrong to crown their relationship as couple goals because news reaching us from a famous gist and gossip blog, is that Adekunle Gold has been incessantly cheating on Simi with numerous women. Some of which are rumored to be within Simi’s circle. And so, from processing what and how we feel, to trying to rationalize how real the news is, to empathizing with Simi and dehumanizing AG Baby by calling all men scum for the umpteenth time, we the loyal fans, as well as the haters and non-committals, have been terribly busy.
According to recent information, AG Baby supposedly slept with a supposed @Teminikan__ in a car while on the set of one of his music videos while Simi was still pregnant with baby Adejare. This news shocked a lot of us for a lot of reasons. First is the fact that just last week at a TVC event, Simi did a full performance she dedicated to her husband Adekunle Gold where she talked about how she doesn’t joke with her husband and how much she loves him. Another reason is the fact that Simi was reportedly pregnant when all of this was going on. So it’s kind of overwhelming. Especially since the @Teminikan__ lady made her Instagram private when the news was released.
Anyway the team “marry your best friend gang” on Twitter had a lot to say about the whole cheating scandal. From those adamantly defending him and claiming the narrative is false like Uncle Pamilerin did, to others that are hell-bent on believing the gossip with little or no evidence. Then as expected, there’s also another group claiming it is not news and that Simi should get with the program because all men cheat.
Still, though, a lot of people seem to be extremely happy at the couple’s mishap and this puts some things into perspective. Like wondering whether or not Nigerians are so bitter and so frustrated that they all of a sudden love the idea of bad news happening to good people? I honestly doubt I’m the only one who found it really weird how a lot of the people were actually rejoicing over the fact that finally their thoughts were brought to life. They were excited because finally there was proof that men couldn’t stay monogamous. It was largely upsetting that people kept pushing that narrative regardless of whether or not you marry your best friend, men will cheat. That the heartbreak will reach everybody. From my perspective, this behavior is vindictive, hurtful, mean, and it needs to end.
Regardless of whether the news is true or false (although we’re hoping it’s not), It’s not an excuse for Nigerians to rally around each other and make a mockery of someone’s real-life crisis. Social Media makes a lot of things possible. A lot of which are good, progressive, and productive. It makes us feel like warriors behind our keypads and gives us untold power as the court of public opinion. However, we shouldn’t forget that people in glass houses shouldn’t throw stones.
My advice to Nigerians, mind your freaking business, give the couple privacy to sort themselves out and work out any issues they may or may not have, and use your data for more productive things like registering for online courses and investing in bitcoin.
