I became a nanny at ten.
It wasn’t because I had experience raising children or because I was interested in raising kids, nor was it because I had a lot of free time on my hands. I became a nanny at ten due to necessity and a ton of unfortunate circumstances.
Growing up as a nanny at ten changed the trajectory of my life in more ways than I could fathom at that age but now thanks to growth, and thanks to enlightenment, I understand better now.
At age ten, I had a big sister in a boarding school, a father that was barely around, and a mother who was very sickly. With her battling high blood pressure and other health complications, the job of raising my twin younger sisters fell on me. Now although she helped out, I remember staying up at night to feed one of them, burp the other while simultaneously reading for my common entrance examinations.
During the holidays, I remember how I’ll avoid going out with the family and choose rather to stay at home. This was because family outings meant I’d be on nanny duty the entire time, and there wasn’t any fun in that for me. I had to sacrifice my childhood, I grew up fast not that I had much of a choice. I can only imagine how it was for my mother. This is because even though I was helping, I was young and she still had to put a lot of things on hold in her life to raise kids in spite of her ill-health. That was my childhood in a nutshell. It wasn’t horrible, it was just inconvenient. It was inconvenient because I had to struggle to carry out responsibilities far greater than myself.
As a young liberal independent woman, I understand the place of wanting your own time and space to build, to work, to be productive, and to stay sane. Especially as a working or a stay-at-home mom. Modern-day women and families shouldn’t have to go through the struggles I and my mother went through. This is why I am excited to introduce you to EveryNanny.
