Former Governor of Nasarawa State, Senator Umaru Tanko Al-Makura, has said reports that he was arrested by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission was not true, saying that he was only invited by the agency in respect to some petitions against him.
The senator and his wife were said to have been detained by the anti-graft agency over allegations of corruption.
But during an interview with newsmen on Thursday morning, Al-Makura who represents Nasarawa South Senatorial District at the National Assembly said, “The rumours surprised me and far as I am concerned, it is baseless.”
According to him, the EFCC invited him before the Sallah break but he informed them that he would appear after Sallah and they obliged.
“When I met with EFCC chairman, he told me there were petitions against me and they wanted to hear from me and my meeting with EFCC chairman wasn’t more than 10 minutes,” he said.
He said during his invitation by the agency, on the petitions against him, he provided them with all the answers they required.
He denied that the invitation has anything to do with his ambition to contest for APC National chairman, adding that he remains a loyal member of the ruling party and he is waiting for the guidelines to officially declare his ambition.
