The last has not been heard on a recent call by the youth wing of the Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF), northern Nigeria’s influential socio-political group, calling for the ban of Big Brother Naija TV reality show.
Not a few Nigerians have also lent their voices in this vox Pop carried out by First News.
Gifty Powers, a former Big Brother Naija housemate, last week said that the reality TV show is satanic and should be terminated.
In a post via her Instagram page, Gifty said that BBNaija is keeping youths in unhealthy competition with one another.
She wrote, “Big Brother Naija needs to be shut down entirely. I wish I knew what I know now. Big Brother Naija has kept lives in competition. Big Brother Naija is satanic.
“Well, you can choose to believe me or not. What I have seen is something my mouth no fit carry. Everyone and their cross. I’ve said my own. The ball is in your court. Bye!
“Please, just in case you start to abuse your generation, know you’re starting with your mother indirectly. Number 1 thing the devil does is to manipulate the weak.”
Gifty is not alone. The Arewa Youth Consultative Forum had also recently, said the show preaches immorality and urged the Federal Government to ban it.
Like the Arewa youths, Ohaneze Ndigbo Youth, had also called on the government to shutdown the show because it promotes immoral behaviours.

Following these views about the most-watched reality show in Nigeria and all over African countries, First News reached out to some Nigerians to ask for their opinions on BBN, if they believe it’s satanic and preaches immorality.
Below are some of their responses:
Damilola-I don’t see what is satanic there. Everybody has a different mindset, the only nasty thing about it is the Truth or Dare game they always play and it’s always at midnight so it is only those that want to watch that part that will.
It is not everyone that goes there that does those things or has sex… So I believe it depends on individual discipline. Another thing is the jacuzzi party where most of them wear bikinis, however, it is not compulsory to partake in it.
Jumoke
Jumoke– Imagine the contestants displaying their nudity. The show doesn’t teach morals, instead, it teaches one to be promiscuous. The show doesn’t recognise talents like that of Yerins.
Yerins got a lot of things to offer but he was evicted because he’s not messing around.
Francis -Well, for me, Big Brother show is not satanic but to showcase your talent or discover the hidden talent embedded in individuals.
Isowo-That’s her (Gifty’s) opinion. We can’t say what brought about her statement or why she said that, neither do we have direct access to ask her “why?”
However, I hold a different perspective about BBN. I’m not watching this year’s own but I followed the last season closely because of Laycon and the content he had. I learnt new stuff and was impressed.
Yeni -I think views on the impact of BBNaija on our lives are quite subjective.
I think the primary goal of the show is to provide entertainment whilst profiting from advertisements and sponsorships. However, the ripple effects are quite disastrous because TV/Media are sometimes instruments of indoctrination. Gullible viewers mostly digest some of the immoral acts displayed by some of these contestants and over time it corrupts our values as we strive to normalise it.
A lot of people have a problem with the show because of the height of its uncensored immoral display. Also, the addiction of watching the show – a lot of people are less productive whenever Big Brother shows are on.
I understand why religious people would tag this show satanic. Probably, because nothing religious is included in the agenda for the show.
I think the show could be responsibly censored or repurposed into something else but I do not think satanic is the word I’d use.
- David – I think gifty’s opinion is unfortunately consistent with that of many pentecostals who attributes satanism to anything that goes against their morals. BBNaija is an entertainment program rated 18 but adjudging it as being satanic is as good as deeming every movie and music rated 18 as being satanic. We’ll do better as a society when we resist the urge to always assess situations and events through religious lenses.
Zinnat
Zinnat -I don’t think the show is satanic. I just feel like the only complaint I’ve heard some people make about the show is that it’s inappropriate.
I guess it’s because of the content of the show. But again, it’s an adult-themed show, so I don’t think it’s satanic. However, people have their different views on things though.
- Kemisola -For me, it is just a reality show in which the contestants showcase themselves for people to see. And again, it helps some to gain financial freedom and to display their craft; take for example, the last season’s winner Laycon. It also gives them the fame they have been craving for but the nudity aspect is not encouraging at all.
Femi -Gifty is just using what she said to trend, that is because she didn’t trend after the season she participated in. So, I think she is using that strategy to trend. I won’t say it is satanic, I will say it is a content and it’s been specified there that if you are less than 18 years of age do not watch and if you are above 18 you can watch.
It’s a content, you can decide to watch or not. However, it’s not only Nigeria that is doing the show other countries are doing theirs.
Tobiloba I think Gifty is just pained that she is just one of the persons that went to Big Brother Naija show and it didn’t do anything in her life; nobody cares about her, she went into the house and came out like a breeze. I am pretty sure she will be saying an entirely different thing if she won the money or she got a whole lot of fame because there are some people that didn’t win the ultimate prize but they got fame – the likes of Tacha, Nengi, Ozo, Vee, Neo, and a host of others. Gifty didn’t win anything so, I feel she is just frustrated that was why she said the show is satanic.
– Daniel-It is just a reality show, a social experiment putting people from different backgrounds in the same house, there is nothing satanic about it except the eyes logo that is causing wahala.
- Emmanuel-There is nothing satanic about the show. The house is filled with different people and they do what they like, some have standards and won’t compromise while others just do their thing the way they feel. The most important part of the show is that it gives people fame because it is the most-watched reality Tv show in Nigeria and other African countries.
