According to Amnesty International, it has acknowledged the release of three people who were detained by Nigerian Army in the Imo River town of Abia State in 2020, two and a half years ago.
The international organisation then requested the Nigerian government to reveal details on the whereabouts of more people who had been the victims of forced disappearances and incommunicado detention.
Wednesday saw the release of Wilfred Dike, 36, Sunday Nwafor, 59, and Uzonwanne Ejiofor, 48, to Amnesty International.
The group was detained for more than 2.5 years in the 14 Brigade Nigerian Army prison in Ohafia, Abia State.
In a post sent via its verified Twitter account, the organisation pleaded with Nigerian authorities to either free additional detainees who had been subjected to “enforced disappearance and incommunicado incarceration” or provide them with access to attorneys and their families.
Amnesty International added that the “release follows Amnesty International’s campaign and call for their freedom, including, as recently as two weeks ago.”
