Kano State Governor, Abdullahi Ganduje, has anointed his deputy, Nasir Gawuna, as his successor and the preferred choice of the All Progressives Congress (APC) for the 2023 governorship election in the state.
Reliable sources said that Ganduje announced Gawuna as his successor at a stakeholders’ meeting he convened.
It was learnt that the party stakeholders at the meeting also agreed that the former Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Murtala Sule Garo, be picked as Gawuna’s running mate in the 2023 gubernatorial poll in the state.
Sources, however, further said that during the meeting, party leaders and elder statesmen had to prevail on Garo to step down for Gawuna.
Garo said to be in control of the APC machinery at the local government level, was believed to be the preferred candidate of Governor Ganduje’s wife, Hafsat.
Recall that Gawuna had served as deputy governor during the eight-year tenure of Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso as Kano governor.
Although Kwankwaso endorsed Ganduje as his successor, but they both went their separate ways shortly after the 2015 elections.
