Senate President Ahmad Lawan on Wednesday named Senate Leader Abdullahi Yahaya as the Leader of the seven-member conference committee to meet with the House of Representatives team to consider the contentious areas of the Electoral Act (amendment) Bill.
Those named to work as members of the committee are, Kabiru Gaya (North-West), Ajibola Basiru (South-West), Danjuma Goje (North-East), Uche Ekwunife (South-East), Sani Musa (North-Central), and Mathew Urhoghide (South-South).
Of the seven-member committee, five of them had voted against the electronic transmission of results when the lawmakers had a division on the issue and opted to cast vote to decide on the matter.
The five senators in the seven-member committee, who were among the senators that voted against electronic transmission of results are, Yahaya, Gaya, Basiru, Goje, and Musa.
Of the committee members, only Urhoghide had voted in support of the electronic transmission of results, while Ekwunife was not available to cast her vote then.
Those who voted for electronic transmission of results wanted the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to transmit election results electronically but those who voted against, who eventually were in the majority, said INEC can only transmit election results electronically if it got approval from the Nigerian Communication Commission and the National Assembly.
