Gunmen have invaded Medium Security Custodial Centre (MSCC) in Kabba, Kogi State and freed no fewer than 240 inmates.
The Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of zone 8, Lokoja, Ayuba Ede, confirming the incident said that the gunmen also killed the two soldiers on roadblock before the prison custody in Kabba area of Kogi State.
The incident was also confirmed by the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) spokesman, Mr Francis Enobore, in a statement on Monday. He said that the gunmen stormed the facility in Kabba, Kogi State around midnight on Sunday.
He explained that the attackers came heavily armed and engaged prison guards in a fierce gun duel as soon as they storm the place.
According to Enobore, the Comptroller–General, Haliru Nababa led a team to assess the situation and has ordered that a recapture procedure be activated immediately and a detailed investigation carried out.
The Comptroller-General pleaded with the general public to furnish security operatives with useful intelligence that will assist in recapturing the escapees.
It was learnt that 294 inmates were in custody as of the time the gunmen attack the facility. Among the inmates, 224 were pre-trial detainees while 70 were convicted inmates.
Recall that unknown gunmen recently invaded the Nigerian Correctional in Imo State and freed 1,844 inmates and then set the facilities ablaze.
