Indication has emerged that the South-West All Progressives Congress may agree on a consensus candidate for the coming presidential race in 2023.
This is coming as the Ekiti State Governor, Kayode Fayemi met with the National Leader of APC, Bola Tinubu in Lagos.
There have been speculations that Fayemi is nursing presidential ambition, but he appears to have mellowed down on the aspiration as much is yet to be seen from him and his supporters.
A source in APC, who spoke about the meeting of the APC giants, said they had been in discussion on the possibility of having a consensus candidate from the South-West.
According to him, “Discussions on 2023 took place with a view to presenting one South-West consensus. If the South-West is divided, the region could be denied the APC Presidential ticket. So, such consultations will continue.”
He also said their discussion was also on the coming governorship election in Ekiti State.
Tinubu is believed to have an interest in Opeyemi Bamidele becoming the next governor of the state while Fayemi is lending his support to the immediate past Secretary to the State Government, Biodun Oyebanji.
“A lot is at stake in this APC governorship primary in Ekiti State. The Peoples Democratic Party is also very strong and the opposition will capitalise on any division in the APC. So, Fayemi came to see Tinubu to seek his support,” he added.
However, another source from Ekiti, said Tinubu may sacrifice Bamidele for Fayemi’s support on his presidential ambition.
Recall that Fayemi has been accused of dominating Ekiti APC while suppressing those who are the supporters of the former Lagos State governor. But with the situation of things, the two giants appear to be coming on the same page over their interests.
