As the threats to the 2023 general elections mount, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), on Wednesday, disclosed that over 45 per cent of the total number of Permanent Voters’ Cards (PVCs) held by Nigerian electorate have become invalid as of January 14, 2022.
But INEC said 1,390,519 PVCs are still valid.
The electoral body, which declared the development as a great challenge, said it would continue to clean up the voters’ register.
INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, disclosed these at a press conference in Abuja, adding that the worsening insecurity posed another big challenge to the conduct of the 2023 general elections.
The INEC chairman said, “We are all concerned about the security challenges. But the environment must be secure for INEC to conduct the election.
“We are liaising with the security agencies to secure the environment for us to conduct the 2023 elections.”
