Nigeria’s Super Falcons on Thursday night got their much needed win to get their Women Africa Cup of Nations campaign back on track as they defeated the Mares of Botswana 2-0 in Rabat.
After a disappointing 2-1 loss to South Africa, the Super Falcons were in a must-win situation in their second game against Botswana.
Nigeria got a breakthrough in the 21st minute with a pass from Halimatu Ayinde which was calmly slotted into the net by Ifeoma Onumonu.
The Super Falcons held onto their lone goal heading into the second half as substitute Christy Ucheibe in the 48th minute doubled the Super Falcons lead with a powerful header to the net from Toni Payne’s corner kick.
Nigeria with three points have now moved second on the group based on goal difference ahead of Botswana also with three points.
Table-toppers South Africa have qualified for the quarter finals after two wins against Nigeria and Burundi.
In the last group match, Nigeria will face Burundi while South Africa will slug it out with their neighbours, Botswana on Sunday.
