Slain soldiers left behind pregnant widows, 21 orphans, reveals Army Chief

In a somber revelation, the Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja, unveiled the heartbreaking aftermath of the tragic loss of 17 Nigerian Army troops in Delta State on March 14, 2024.

Lagbaja disclosed that the fallen soldiers left behind a poignant legacy: 10 widows, including three pregnant women, and 21 orphans.

Addressing the gathering at the burial ceremony in the Military Cemetery, Lagbaja expressed profound sorrow over the plight of the families left behind by the slain military personnel.

He painted a poignant picture of the profound impact of the loss, emphasizing the harrowing reality faced by the widows and orphans left to navigate life without their loved ones.

In a poignant address, Lagbaja stated, “Your Excellency, distinguished guests, ladies and gentlemen, the Okuama killing has added to the care of the Nigerian Army and, by extension, the Nigeria state – 10 widows (three of whom are 4, 5, and 8 months pregnant), 21 orphans, and many other dependents which include parents.”

The revelation underscored the depth of the tragedy and the immense responsibility borne by the nation to support the families of the fallen heroes.

Lagbaja offered assurances that the Nigerian Army, together with the nation, would stand by the bereaved families, providing solace and assistance to ease their burden in the face of unimaginable loss.

Meanwhile, President Bola Tinubu, the special guest of honour at the burial ceremony, paid tribute to the deceased officers, declaring that they would be posthumously awarded national honours.

The solemn occasion served as a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by Nigeria’s gallant soldiers in the line of duty, as the nation mourns the loss of its brave defenders.
